Lessons from the Fox News Mass Effect saga

зарание сори тем, кто не понимает английский
если кому не впадлу - можете перевести для всех)It all started with this clip:
I think it's clear to most gamers that Geoff Keighley knows what he is talking about, unlike everyone else appearing in the clip. I made this handy chart:
Usually when someone introduced on the news as the author of such and such a book they are appearing on television only to sell their book. In this case, why else would the news anchor mention Cooper Lawrence's book on how to manage your life as a perfectionist when they are about to discuss the issue of sex in a video game? Lawrence is simply trying to push her book on the FOX news viewers, most of whom don't give a crap about video games. But in the clip she is poised in the attack position by the supposedly neutral news anchor who asks "How damaging is it really?", as if the only issue up for debate is the degree of damage that will surely be caused by this game. What Lawrence overlooks is that she has a responsibility to not mislead the public when appearing as an expert on a news program. Though she has a background in developmental psychology she was completely ignorant of the true nature of video games and the so-called Mass Effect / (Se)Xbox "issue".
Lawrence's ignorance was evident in her non-sequitur arguing tactics - "I've gotta go with the research", she says not even addressing Keighley's points while implying he doesn't "go with the research" in an ironic straw man fallacy. Leaving Keighley no time to reply, the anchor quickly moves to a useless panel to discuss irrelevant generalities. My point is that it's the format of what transpired in the clip that is the most tragic. Most of us are more informed than the expert pundit and it's painfully obvious that there is something wrong with this way of "reporting" the news.
More recently, Lawrence admits she unjustly labeled Mass Effect as pornography. In our cyberland blogosphere some may be satisfied with her retraction, but most people who actually watched the clip on live broadcast television are still left with the notion that there was something bad going on with video games again. Meanwhile, Geoff Keighley hopes for the day when he will be asked to appear on FOX news to discuss video games in a positive light.
